I know what you’re thinking. Groan. Not another message from INscribe Digital about my metadata. But don’t get discouraged yet! Metadata is more than just an Excel spreadsheet or ONIX feed, it’s your digital book jacket, cover, and card catalog – it’s everything about your eBook. Most importantly: Metadata is money!
We’ve already covered one of the most important parts of your book: a good, high-resolution cover image in our post Judge a Book by Its Cover. Booklovers tend to download titles that have high quality images. Nielsen’s 2012 study on the impact of complete metadata with cover image showed a 268% increase in sales compared to those lacking in the metadata department.
Now, covers are one thing, but what about that dreaded Excel spreadsheet? The Nielsen report recorded a 55% increase in sales when all metadata fields were filled out completely. Yes, this includes the Author Bio and more than one BISAC (BIC, in the UK) code. The bare minimum (ISBN, Title, Author, Publisher, etc.) just doesn’t cut it.
Still a bit skeptical? Here’s what the authors had to say:
“Given the indications that we have for online sales, there is a strong suggestion that supplying complete and enhanced metadata will be even more vital for e-books, where the bibliographic data is the consumer’s only source of information. The implication is that as the book industry takes its next step into the digital age, metadata will not only remain an essential part of the industry but become increasingly important. “ (Breedt and Walter, 5)
In this fast-paced digital age, there’s just a second to grab the customer’s attention. And it all comes down to metadata. Together, we can make sure that your metadata meets its potential. In this blog series, we’ll feature all aspects of your metadata from choosing the right power phrases and keywords to the all-important BISAC codes. Stay tuned for our next installment of The Metadata Mindset!
